Policy & Advocacy

Influencing decisions that protect ocean ecosystems

The Importance of Policy

Effective ocean conservation requires strong policies and regulations at local, national, and international levels. While individual actions matter, systemic change requires policy frameworks that protect marine ecosystems, regulate harmful activities, and create incentives for conservation. SeaSave Collective works to influence policy decisions that affect ocean health.

Our advocacy efforts are grounded in science and informed by the needs of marine ecosystems and coastal communities. We work with governments, international organizations, and stakeholders to develop and implement policies that protect ocean health while supporting sustainable development.

Marine Protected Areas

We advocate for the establishment and effective management of marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs are essential tools for conserving biodiversity, rebuilding fish stocks, and building ecosystem resilience. We work to ensure that MPAs are well-designed, adequately funded, and effectively enforced.

Design and Planning

Effective MPAs require careful design based on scientific understanding of ecosystem needs, species distributions, and threats. We support research that informs MPA design and work with stakeholders to develop management plans that balance conservation and use objectives.

Fisheries Management

We advocate for science-based fisheries management that maintains fish populations at sustainable levels. This includes supporting catch limits based on stock assessments, promoting selective fishing gear that reduces bycatch, and advocating for policies that eliminate illegal fishing.

Pollution Reduction

We work to reduce pollution through policy advocacy, supporting regulations that limit nutrient runoff, control industrial discharges, and reduce plastic production. We advocate for extended producer responsibility programs and policies that promote circular economy principles.

International Agreements

Ocean challenges require international cooperation. We engage with international processes, including UN negotiations on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, climate agreements, and regional fisheries management organizations. We work to ensure that international agreements are ambitious, science-based, and effectively implemented.

SeaSave Collective's Advocacy Impact

Our advocacy efforts have contributed to the establishment of new marine protected areas, strengthened fisheries regulations, and advanced international agreements on ocean conservation. We've worked with governments and stakeholders to develop policies that protect marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable development.

Policy change takes time, but it creates lasting impact. By influencing decisions at all levels of governance, we help create the legal and regulatory frameworks necessary for effective ocean conservation. Our advocacy work ensures that science informs policy and that conservation needs are represented in decision-making processes.
